Isochrysidaceae is a family of haptophyte microalgae that, within the context of hydroponics and recirculating aquaculture systems, act as a biological contaminant. While these organisms are beneficial in specialized marine biology, their proliferation in agricultural nutrient solutions creates a dysfunctional environment that hinders crop development.

This biological issue primarily affects leafy greens, herbs, and other crops grown in hydroponic setups or aquaponic systems. The algae compete directly with the cultivated plants for nitrogen, phosphorus, and other essential nutrients, essentially starving the crops and leading to stunted growth.

The key symptoms of an Isochrysidaceae bloom include a distinct change in the color of the nutrient reservoir (typically turning a tea-like or brownish-green color) and the formation of slimy biofilms on tubes, pumps, and irrigation lines. Furthermore, oxygen levels in the water drop significantly, which causes root suffocation and promotes secondary fungal infections.

Growth is triggered by light penetration into nutrient tanks, poor aeration, and high temperatures. In industrial greenhouse environments, even minor light leaks into piping systems can lead to rapid colonization of these algae, causing blockages in drip irrigation systems and reducing the efficiency of nutrient delivery.

Effective management requires a combination of physical and chemical preventive measures:

  • Light-proofing all nutrient reservoirs and transparent irrigation pipes.
  • Implementation of UV-C sterilizers in the water circulation system to kill algal spores.
  • Regular cleaning and sterilization of irrigation equipment with food-grade disinfectants.
  • Diligent monitoring of nutrient solution salinity and temperature to prevent rapid blooms.
