The Isochrysidales order consists of haptophyte microalgae that are essential in aquatic environments but can become a significant challenge in controlled agricultural settings. While not traditional plant pathogens, their rapid proliferation can disrupt the balance of hydroponic systems, affecting the growth and yield of cultivated crops.

The causative agent of the bloom consists of free-living, often flagellated cells that thrive in nutrient-rich water. These organisms do not infect plant tissues directly but act as aggressive competitors for dissolved nutrients, carbon dioxide, and sunlight. This competition can lead to nutrient deficiencies in the crops and cause physiological stress.

Symptoms of an infestation are clearly visible in the water reservoir: the liquid turns opaque with shades of gold, brown, or green. In advanced stages, a slimy biofilm may coat piping, pumps, and roots. This layer physically blocks oxygen transfer to the roots and can cause root asphyxiation, leading to plant wilt or secondary decay.

Development is driven by environmental conditions such as high temperatures, strong artificial or natural light, and the accumulation of nitrogen and phosphorus. In stagnant or slow-moving water, these organisms undergo rapid vegetative cell division. Their survival is ensured by the formation of cysts that withstand desiccation and low nutrient levels until conditions improve.

Managing the population of Isochrysidales requires a strict maintenance protocol for agricultural water infrastructure. Essential preventive steps include installing high-efficiency particulate air or water filters, using ultraviolet radiation to disrupt cell metabolism, and implementing dark-storage practices for nutrient tanks. Maintaining balanced water chemistry prevents the overgrowth of these algae and protects the overall health of the crop production cycle.
