Description

Isochrysis is a genus of marine haptophyte algae that poses a significant challenge in controlled-environment agriculture, particularly in hydroponic and aquaponic systems. While not a conventional plant disease like mildew, it acts as a severe biological contaminant that interferes with optimal crop growth and system efficiency.

The development of Isochrysis is essentially an algal bloom triggered by high nutrient levels and light exposure in circulating water. This type of disturbance creates an environment where physical and chemical parameters, such as dissolved oxygen levels and pH balance, shift rapidly, negatively impacting the root zone of the crops.

These algae affect a wide range of hydroponically grown crops, especially leafy greens like lettuce and various herbs. When Isochrysis populates the nutrient solution, it creates a layer of biofilm on the roots, which hinders nutrient uptake and contributes to root zone hypoxia, ultimately leading to stunted growth and reduced yields.

Symptoms are easily identified by a distinct green discoloration of the nutrient solution and the presence of a slippery, gelatinous residue on system components. Affected plants often exhibit signs of systemic stress, including chlorosis, wilting, and a browning of the root system as the biofilm obstructs the oxygen exchange.

  • Elevated temperatures in the reservoir (above 20°C).
  • Excessive concentration of nitrates and phosphates.
  • Poor aeration and stagnation of the nutrient fluid.

Effective control relies on rigorous physical and chemical management. The primary defense is light exclusion—ensuring all reservoirs, tanks, and pipes are completely opaque. Additionally, maintaining system hygiene through regular sterilization with hydrogen peroxide or implementing UV-C filtration can effectively prevent Isochrysis proliferation.
