Description

Itersonilia parsnip canker, caused by the fungus Itersonilia pastinacae, is a significant disease affecting parsnip crops globally. This pathogen is particularly notorious for damaging the roots of the plant, which are the primary economic part of the crop, making it a major concern for commercial growers.

The host range is primarily limited to parsnips (Pastinaca sativa). The fungus acts as a necrotrophic pathogen, invading tissues and causing cell death. It persists in the soil through infected debris, ensuring its survival from one growing season to the next if proper sanitation is not maintained.

Clinical signs include small, dark, irregular spots on the leaves and stems in the early stages. However, the most critical damage occurs on the roots, where the fungus causes sunken, dark-colored cankers (lesions). These lesions weaken the structure of the root and often lead to rot.

The development of the disease is heavily dictated by environmental factors. High moisture levels, particularly persistent rain or heavy dew, combined with temperatures between 15°C and 20°C, trigger the production of ballistospores, which are then easily spread by wind and water splash to healthy foliage.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to mitigate the risk of infection. Key strategies include:

  • Implementing a wide crop rotation cycle of at least 3 to 4 years to reduce soil inoculum.
  • Ensuring proper soil drainage to prevent water stagnation.
  • Deep plowing to bury infected plant residues.
  • Applying preventive fungicides if environmental conditions favor disease development.
