Itersonilia leaf spot is a destructive fungal disease caused by the pathogen Itersonilia perplexans. This fungus belongs to the family Itersoniliaceae and is primarily recognized for its significant impact on the ornamental industry, specifically causing severe damage to chrysanthemum crops grown both in greenhouses and open fields.

The biological cycle of this fungus involves the production of ballistospores, which are forcibly discharged into the air and dispersed by wind or splashing water droplets. Once the spores land on a susceptible host plant, they germinate rapidly if the environmental conditions—specifically moisture and temperature—are favorable, initiating the infection process in leaves, stems, or flowers.

Symptoms initially manifest as small, brown, or necrotic spots that can quickly expand, causing significant tissue collapse. On flower petals, the infection manifests as discolored lesions that eventually turn brown and necrotic, severely reducing the aesthetic and commercial value of the blooms. In high-humidity conditions, a faint whitish mycelial growth may appear on the underside of leaves.
