Jackrogersella is a genus of fungi within the Hypoxylaceae family, previously associated with the Hypoxylon genus. These fungi are significant agents of white rot, targeting both weakened and aging woody plants. In agricultural and forestry settings, they are known to thrive on damaged tissues, effectively colonizing the cambium and wood structure of various deciduous species.
The pathogen functions by secreting specialized enzymes that break down lignin and cellulose, the primary structural components of tree wood. This biological activity turns the wood into a spongy or brittle mass, leading to a condition known as white rot. While often considered secondary pathogens, they can hasten the decline of trees already stressed by drought, poor soil quality, or mechanical injury.
