Jackrogersella cohaerens is a species of ascomycete fungus that acts primarily as a saprotroph, though it can function as a weak pathogen on weakened deciduous trees. Historically referred to as Hypoxylon cohaerens, this fungus belongs to the family Xylariaceae. It is a common inhabitant of forest ecosystems where it plays a dual role in both decomposing dead organic matter and occasionally exploiting live trees that have lost their natural resistance.

This fungus predominantly affects species within the genus Fagus, especially the European beech (Fagus sylvatica). While beech is the primary host, it has been recorded on various other deciduous trees including hornbeam, hazel, and alder. The fungus colonizes the bark and the underlying sapwood, eventually working its way into the heartwood as it feeds on the structural components of the tree.

The main symptom of Jackrogersella cohaerens infection is the emergence of distinctive stromata through the bark. These fungal fruiting bodies appear as small, cushion-shaped, or hemispherical structures. Initially brown, they darken to a deep black as they mature. The stromata often aggregate, creating a bumpy, blackened appearance on the surface of the bark, which serves as a definitive sign for identifying the presence of the pathogen.
