Previously classified within the Hypoxylon genus, this fungus acts primarily as a saprotroph, though it can exhibit weak parasitic behavior on weakened trees. It is characterized by its ability to colonize and break down the woody tissue of broad-leaved plants.
The pathogen typically invades its host through mechanical injuries, such as broken branches, bark cracks, or pruning wounds. Once inside, it utilizes enzymes to degrade complex organic compounds like lignin and cellulose, which are essential structural components of wood. This degradation process effectively weakens the tree's internal structure over time.
Broad-leaved trees and woody shrubs are the primary targets for Jackrogersella minutella. The fungus is frequently observed on twigs, branches, and trunks that have been compromised by environmental stress, such as frost, heat, or insect damage. In healthy specimens, the tree's natural defenses usually contain the fungus, but weakened states favor its proliferation.
The diagnostic symptoms of this disease include the formation of small, carbonaceous, coal-black stromata on the surface of the bark. These structures appear as tiny, dense cushions or pustules. As the infection progresses, the area around these growths often shows signs of bark necrosis, dieback of the cambium layer, and, in severe cases, the eventual death of affected branches.
Management and prevention focus heavily on strict sanitation. Gardeners and forest managers should regularly inspect trees for signs of decay and remove infected branches immediately. Pruning should be performed using sterilized tools, and all fresh wounds should be protected with appropriate wound-sealing compounds.
