Jackrogersella multiformis is an ascomycete fungus that acts primarily as a pathogen of hardwood trees. Formerly known as Hypoxylon multiforme, this organism is widely recognized in mycology for its role in wood decay. While it frequently occupies dead or decaying wood, it can transition into an aggressive parasite on stressed living trees, leading to serious bark and phloem necrosis.

The fungus is commonly found on a variety of broad-leaved species, with birch, alder, and hornbeam being among its primary hosts. By invading through bark wounds, frost cracks, or improper pruning cuts, the fungus establishes a mycelial network that systematically breaks down the vascular tissue of the host plant.

Diagnostic symptoms are visually distinct. As the infection progresses, the fungus produces stromata—raised, cushion-like fruiting bodies—that push through the tree bark. These bodies start as reddish-brown or yellowish structures and eventually mature into carbonized, black, angular, or irregularly shaped crusts, which are tell-tale signs of the pathogen's presence.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the spread of Jackrogersella multiformis. The fungus thrives in moist conditions, which are ideal for spore production and dispersal. Poor tree health, often resulting from drought, soil compaction, or overcrowding, leaves trees vulnerable to infection, as these factors inhibit the tree's natural ability to compartmentalize wounds.

Effective management and prevention strategies include:

  • implementing rigorous sanitation by removing and destroying heavily infected wood;
  • avoiding mechanical damage to tree trunks during routine maintenance;
  • protecting pruning cuts with specialized wound dressings;
