Jafneadelphus amethystinus is an ascomycete fungus that acts as a pathogen in forest ecosystems and nurseries. While often found on forest floor debris, it is recognized in agricultural pathology for its potential to transition into a parasitic mode, attacking the root systems of juvenile forest tree seedlings.

The disease is caused by the activity of the fungus within the soil, where it colonizes organic matter before extending its mycelium to living roots. It belongs to the Pyronemataceae family, and its biological life cycle is highly dependent on environmental moisture levels and the presence of susceptible host tissue near the soil surface.

Seedlings of conifer species, particularly spruce and pine, are the most common hosts. The pathogen targets nursery-grown plants where high density and artificial environments provide an ideal setting for the fungus to spread rapidly across seedling beds, leading to patch-like wilting and mortality.

Symptoms of infestation are characterized by the chlorosis and browning of needles, followed by total collapse of the plant. A diagnostic feature is the emergence of small, amethyst or purple-colored apothecia (fruiting bodies) directly on the soil surface surrounding the base of the stems of affected seedlings.
