Jahnula is a genus of fungi belonging to the Ascomycota division. In agricultural and forestry sectors, these organisms act primarily as saprotrophs or weak parasites, inhabiting decaying wood, submerged twigs, and plant debris found in aquatic or moist soil environments.
The disease is caused by ascomycetous fungi from the Jahnulaceae family. The genus is characterized by the production of perithecia, which are small fruiting bodies that develop on the surface of the substrate. High moisture levels are critical for the life cycle, spore germination, and colonization processes of this fungus.
The fungus mainly affects deciduous wood species, shrubs, and woody plant debris in humid habitats. It penetrates plant tissues through bark fissures, wounds, or structural damage, gradually degrading the lignin and cellulose components of the cell walls within the affected host.
Symptoms of the infection include discoloration of the wood surface, localized darkening, and the appearance of small black dots, which are the fungal fruiting bodies. As the infestation progresses, the wood texture becomes softened and brittle, making the plant susceptible to secondary infections and opportunistic pests.
