Jahnula aquatica is a distinctive freshwater fungus belonging to the class Dothideomycetes. While primarily known to science as a lignicolous or aquatic saprotroph that decomposes submerged wood, in agricultural or controlled aquatic environments, it can interact with live plant tissues, potentially causing health degradation in specific moisture-loving plant species.
The pathogen thrives by infecting the host's surface tissues. It is characterized as a fungal disease that utilizes the host plant as a substrate for its reproductive structures, known as ascomata. This infection type primarily targets the epidermal layers and vascular tissues, hindering the transport of nutrients within the plant.
Targeted crops include various aquatic plants, macrophytes, and marginal vegetation used in landscaping or specialized hydroponic systems. The disease risk increases significantly when plants are already weakened by unfavorable water chemistry, lack of light, or overcrowding, which limits natural water circulation.
Key symptoms include the appearance of dark, pinpoint-like dots on the surface of stems and foliage, representing the development of fruiting bodies.
