Juncaceicola dactylidis is a specialized fungal pathogen primarily affecting various species of grasses. As a causative agent of foliar diseases, it primarily targets the foliage, causing spots and tissue necrosis. Understanding its biological cycle is essential for agronomists managing pastures, hayfields, and seed production sites where this fungus can become prevalent.
The primary host for this pathogen is orchard grass (Dactylis glomerata). The fungus infects the leaf blades, utilizing the host's nutrients for the development of its mycelium and subsequent spore production. While it is mostly known for its impact on forage crops, it can also persist on various wild grasses, serving as a primary source of inoculum for commercial fields.
Symptoms of Juncaceicola dactylidis include small chlorotic spots that eventually expand and turn brown or dark grey as the tissue dies. Under conditions of high humidity, the fungus produces visible fruiting bodies on the surface of the lesions. Severe infections lead to extensive necrosis, resulting in the yellowing and premature drying of the entire leaf, which reduces the overall photosynthetic capacity of the plant.
The development and spread of the disease are heavily dependent on environmental conditions. High humidity, prolonged rainfall, and moderate temperatures (approximately 18–22°C) are highly conducive to fungal sporulation and germination. During such periods, the disease can spread rapidly throughout the canopy, especially in fields with high stand density that restricts airflow.
The harmful effects of this pathogen are significant in agricultural terms, leading to reduced dry matter yield and decreased protein content in the forage. Furthermore, seed quality can be severely degraded in affected seed crops. Effective control and prevention strategies include:
