Description
Kabatina blight is a fungal disease caused by the Kabatina genus of fungi, which primarily attacks various coniferous species. This pathogen is responsible for shoot blight, leading to the gradual dieback of needles and stems, which can significantly damage the health and appearance of landscape plants.
Common hosts of this pathogen include various Juniper species, as well as arborvitae and cypress. The disease is particularly problematic in dense plantings or nurseries where high humidity and limited airflow create favorable conditions for the fungal spores to germinate and colonize new tissue.
Symptoms typically become noticeable in early spring when the tips of branches turn yellow, then tan or reddish-brown. If one examines the infected tissue closely, small black fruiting bodies called pycnidia can be seen erupting through the bark. This is a definitive sign of Kabatina activity distinguishing it from other blights.
The development of the disease is heavily influenced by cool, wet weather. Spores are dispersed through splashing water or wind. Furthermore, infection usually occurs through microscopic cracks or wounds on the plant's surface caused by insect feeding, weather events, or improper maintenance practices like aggressive pruning.
Effective management begins with strict sanitation: pruning out infected branches several inches into healthy wood is essential. To prevent the spread, ensure proper site drainage, adequate plant spacing for airflow, and avoid overhead irrigation. Chemical control involves the application of fungicides, particularly those containing copper or systemic agents, at the onset of the growing season.
