Kabatina shoot blight is a fungal infection caused by the pathogen Kabatina juniperi. It is a significant disease that affects various species of conifers, leading to the dieback of branches and twigs. The pathogen compromises the aesthetic value of ornamental plants, making them look scorched and unhealthy within a short period.

The primary hosts of this fungus are plants within the Juniperus genus. Junipers, including popular landscape varieties like savin and creeping juniper, are highly susceptible. Occasionally, the disease is also identified on other members of the Cupressaceae family, such as arborvitae, which can act as secondary hosts in mixed landscapes.

Key symptoms include the yellowing and subsequent browning of branch tips, typically appearing in the spring. As the disease progresses, the foliage becomes necrotic. A defining feature of Kabatina juniperi is the presence of small, grey-to-black fungal fruiting bodies, known as acervuli, located at the junction between the infected and healthy tissue on the stems.

The development of the disease is heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly cool and wet weather during the spring. Rain splashing is the main mechanism for spore dispersal, carrying the pathogen from infected twigs to healthy foliage. High plant density and poor air circulation significantly increase the risk of infection, as moisture remains trapped within the foliage.

Management strategies focus on a combination of cultural and chemical controls to mitigate damage. Essential measures include:

  • Pruning and destroying infected branches to reduce inoculum levels.
  • Sterilizing pruning tools between cuts to prevent spreading the spores.
  • Applying preventive fungicide sprays, such as copper-based compounds, during the early spring growing season.
  • Improving plant spacing and site selection to ensure better airflow and reduced humidity around the canopy.
