Keissleriella is a genus of ascomycetous fungi that act as pathogens causing various leaf spots and necroses in agricultural crops. Most commonly, this pathogen is associated with infecting the stems and leaves of cereal plants, including wheat and barley, acting as a saprotroph or a weak parasite that thrives when the plant's natural immune system is compromised.

The primary type of disease caused by members of this genus (such as Keissleriella ocellata) is leaf spotting. The pathogen attacks vegetative plant organs, penetrating tissues through stomata or mechanical damage to the epidermis. The fungus is capable of surviving for long periods on crop residues, making it a persistent component of the infection pool in crop rotations with high cereal density.

Symptomatically, the infection manifests as the formation of distinct spots on leaf blades and leaf sheaths. These spots typically appear oval or elongated in shape, featuring a necrotic center surrounded by a lighter-colored margin. Under high humidity conditions, the fungus produces fruiting bodies (pseudothecia) on the surface of the infected tissues, appearing as minute black dots visible to the naked eye.

Disease development is closely linked to weather patterns, where moderate temperatures and high moisture facilitate active sporulation and conidia dispersal. The infection progresses more rapidly in dense stands where air circulation is restricted and moisture accumulates. Such damage impairs the plant's photosynthetic capacity, ultimately leading to premature leaf senescence and drying.

Control measures require an integrated approach. Essential agronomic practices include the deep incorporation of crop debris, strict adherence to crop rotation, and the management of weeds that may serve as alternative hosts for the infection. In high-risk fields, fungicide applications during critical growth stages are recommended, based on disease monitoring and meteorological forecasts.
