Description
Rice kernel smut, caused by the fungus Neovossia horrida (syn. Tilletia barclayana), is a significant plant disease that specifically impacts rice crops. The pathogen is a basidiomycete that invades the ovaries of rice florets, replacing the endosperm with a dense mass of black teliospores. It is a persistent problem in many rice-growing regions worldwide, causing direct yield losses.
The primary symptom of this disease appears during the grain ripening stage. While the panicles may seem healthy initially, infected grains eventually burst, releasing a dark, powdery spore mass. These spores often cover the glumes and even adjacent grains, giving the panicles a blackened or charred appearance. The integrity of the grain is completely compromised by the internal fungal growth.
Development and dissemination of kernel smut are heavily influenced by environmental factors. High relative humidity and frequent rainfall during the flowering (anthesis) period are critical for infection. The spores are dispersed by wind and rain, landing on the stigmas of the rice flowers, where they germinate and colonize the developing ovary. Cloudy weather further promotes the survival and germination of these spores.
The economic impact is substantial. Beyond the physical loss of grain weight, the quality of the harvested rice is severely degraded. Infected lots are often rejected by mills due to the unpleasant odor, off-color flour, and the presence of fungal spores, which can affect the taste and quality of cooked rice. In severe cases, the entire harvest may be rendered unfit for commercial use.
