Description

Khamedj, caused by the fungus Mauginiella scaettae, is a devastating disease affecting the inflorescences of the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera). This pathogen poses a significant threat to date production, as it directly attacks the reproductive parts of the tree, rendering pollination and fruit development impossible.

The fungus is a specialized parasite that thrives in environments with high humidity and moderate temperatures. The infection typically initiates when the fungus colonizes the developing inflorescences, taking advantage of the susceptible tissue during the early stages of blooming and emergence from the spathe.

The primary symptom of the disease is the rotting of the inflorescence. Initially, small brown spots appear on the stalks, which eventually merge into larger necrotic areas.
