Kickxella alabastrina is a microscopic fungus belonging to the phylum Zygomycota, order Kickxellales. While this species is primarily classified as a saprotroph living in soil and decaying organic matter, under certain agronomic conditions, it can exhibit parasitic traits by affecting weakened plant tissues.
The pathogen is a typical mold fungus that forms characteristic sporulating structures, specifically sporangiophores with distinctive, alabaster-like heads. The fungal mycelium develops rapidly, colonizing the substrate and absorbing nutrients, which, during mass propagation, negatively impacts the root system or the root collar of various agricultural crops.
Crops most susceptible to this microflora include greenhouse vegetables such as tomatoes and cucumbers, as well as seedlings grown under high-humidity conditions. The fungus frequently targets plants with a compromised immune system caused by irregular watering, insufficient light, or temperature stress in greenhouse environments.
Optimal conditions for the spread of this fungus include high relative humidity (above 85%) and water stagnation in the soil. The development of the pathogen is often exacerbated by poor ventilation in greenhouses and the presence of abundant undecomposed organic residues, which serve as a primary nutritional substrate for fungal spores.
Protection measures are centered on maintaining strict phytosanitary standards. It is essential to ensure regular ventilation of facilities, control substrate moisture levels, and perform timely disinfection of greenhouses. At the first signs of mold growth, the use of broad-spectrum fungicides targeting soil-borne infections is recommended, alongside the application of Trichoderma-based biofungicides to suppress fungal colonies.
