The Kickxellomycotina subphylum consists of a diverse group of fungi, many of which reside in the soil as part of the complex rhizosphere ecosystem. While they are often viewed as decomposers, certain lineages have developed specialized relationships with plant roots, which can occasionally shift towards pathogenicity, especially under stressed environmental conditions.

These fungi tend to target the root systems of various horticultural and broad-acre crops. Plants suffering from root system compromises, whether due to waterlogging or nutrient imbalance, are particularly susceptible. The impact is often observed in nurseries or intensive greenhouse environments where the soil-plant balance is delicate.

Symptoms of infestation are frequently manifested as stunting, chlorosis, and general loss of vigor. Once established in the substrate, they can persist for long durations, waiting for suitable hosts.
