Description

Kretzschmaria (specifically Kretzschmaria deusta) is a significant wood-decaying fungus that primarily attacks broad-leaved trees. It is known for causing a form of brittle decay, which targets the structural integrity of the tree, often leading to sudden failure and collapse of the trunk or major root systems.

The disease is classified as a soft rot pathogen. It secretes enzymes that decompose cellulose and lignin, effectively hollowing out the tree from within. Over time, the internal wood tissue transforms into a dark, brittle mass, often delineated by distinct white or black lines, which are characteristic of the fungal colonization process.

This pathogen is commonly found on various hardwood species, including beech, oak, maple, and lime. In orchard environments, older fruit trees with compromised immunity or physical damage are particularly susceptible. The fungus typically enters the tree through pruning wounds, frost cracks, or damaged roots that have been exposed to stressful environmental conditions.

The most prominent sign of infection is the appearance of fruiting bodies at the base of the tree or on exposed roots. These fruiting bodies are hard, carbonaceous, and charcoal-like in appearance, often forming large, irregular, coal-black crusts.
