Kretzschmaria cetrarioides is a species of ascomycete fungus within the Xylariaceae family, primarily recognized as a wood-decay pathogen. This fungus plays a significant role in forest ecosystems as a decomposer, but in managed landscapes, it becomes a serious threat to the structural integrity of host trees.
The host range of Kretzschmaria cetrarioides mainly involves various hardwood species, particularly broad-leaved trees such as oaks and beeches. It often colonizes trees that are already suffering from environmental stress, poor soil conditions, or previous mechanical wounds that facilitate the entry of the fungal mycelium into the heartwood.
Diagnostic signs of infection include the development of characteristic dark, crust-like or leather-like stromatic fruiting bodies on the bark surface. As the fungus consumes the lignin, the internal wood structure turns soft and stringy. This white rot leads to structural instability, making infected branches or trunks highly susceptible to breaking under wind loads.
The growth and dissemination of this pathogen are highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. The fungus produces spores that can travel through air currents to settle on fresh bark wounds. Once established, the mycelium persists within the host tissue for many years, continuously degrading the wood.
Mitigation of Kretzschmaria cetrarioides involves integrated management practices. While there is no direct chemical cure for internal rot, the following preventative measures are essential:
