Kretzschmaria clavus is a pathogenic fungus belonging to the Xylariaceae family, known for causing severe wood rot in various woody plants. Acting as both a saprotroph and a weak parasite, it targets compromised trees, infiltrating the vascular system and structural wood tissues to extract necessary nutrients for its growth.
The host range of this fungus is quite broad, including various hardwood species, citrus trees, and important commercial crops like cocoa. In many cases, the fungus acts as an opportunistic pathogen, exploiting injuries caused by environmental stress, insect activity, or improper pruning practices in orchards and plantations.
The most visible symptoms of Kretzschmaria clavus include the development of characteristic black, club-shaped stroma emerging through the bark of the host tree. Inside, the infection induces white rot, where the fungus degrades cellulose and lignin, significantly softening the wood and eventually causing the collapse of the structural integrity of the stems or branches.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the prevalence of this disease. High humidity levels, prolonged rainfall, and poor air circulation within a stand create an ideal microclimate for the spores to germinate and infect vulnerable plant tissues. The pathogen is primarily dispersed by water splash and wind, making rapid management in dense plantings essential.
Effective management strategies focus on containment and sanitation. Since there are limited systemic fungicides for mature wood rot pathogens, prevention is key. Growers should prioritize maintaining healthy tree vigor through proper fertilization, avoiding wounding during harvesting, and promptly removing and destroying infected plant material to reduce the overall spore load in the immediate environment.
