Kuehneola is a genus of parasitic fungi known for causing rust diseases in various plant species, most notably within the Rosaceae family. The most economically significant species, Kuehneola uredinis, is responsible for the white rust of blackberry and raspberry. This pathogen acts as an obligate parasite, deriving nutrients directly from the host's living cells.

The primary hosts for this disease include blackberries and raspberries, both wild and cultivated. Kuehneola is capable of infecting stems, foliage, and fruit. Because it is a systemic or localized pathogen depending on the species strain, it can affect the plant's overall health, leading to weakened growth and reduced vigor over several growing seasons.

The visual symptoms of the disease appear as small, bright yellow to white pustules on the undersides of leaves and on the canes. As the disease progresses, these pustules erupt, releasing a mass of white or cream-colored spores. Unlike many other rust fungi that produce orange or brown spores, the white coloration is a distinct diagnostic feature of this genus.

Development and spread are heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly humidity and temperature. Warm, moist conditions with frequent rainfall or heavy dew facilitate the germination of spores and the secondary spread of the infection. The fungus can persist in the soil debris or within the perennial canes, serving as a reservoir for the following year's outbreak.

The economic impact of Kuehneola can be severe, leading to significant yield losses. Infected leaves drop prematurely, which disrupts carbohydrate production and weakens the plant's ability to survive winter dormancy. Furthermore, direct infection of the fruit makes it unmarketable and susceptible to further rot, causing substantial financial damage to commercial berry producers.
