Description
The genus Kuehneromyces comprises wood-decaying fungi that, while ecologically significant in forest ecosystems, act as opportunistic pathogens in cultivated orchards. These fungi primarily attack deciduous trees, targeting weakened or damaged timber and causing internal decay that significantly reduces the lifespan of the host.
The disease process begins when basidiospores land on exposed plant tissues, such as pruning wounds, cracked bark, or damage caused by borers. Once inside, the mycelium initiates the decomposition of structural wood components, specifically cellulose and lignin, which leads to structural instability and internal heart rot.
Susceptible hosts include a wide range of fruit-bearing trees such as apple, pear, and plum, as well as various ornamental hardwood trees. The severity of the infection depends on the health status of the tree; well-maintained, vigorous trees are naturally more resistant to the colonization of these fungi compared to neglected specimens.
Key symptoms of Kuehneromyces infestation include the development of clusters of small, honey-colored mushrooms on the bark or near the root collar. Internally, the wood becomes brittle and discolored, often leading to canopy dieback, leaf yellowing, and eventually the sudden collapse of the tree under heavy weather conditions.
Prevention and management require strict adherence to orchard hygiene. Key measures include:
- Proper sanitation by removing dead or dying wood from the premises.
- Applying protective wound dressings to all major pruning cuts.
- Preventing bark damage during mechanical cultivation or harvesting.
- Monitoring the vitality of old trees to remove them before they become significant infection sources.
