Sheathed woodtuft (Kuehneromyces mutabilis) is a wood-decay fungus that acts as a facultative parasite in agricultural and forestry environments. While often recognized as an edible species, it poses a significant threat to fruit trees by causing aggressive white rot of the xylem and root systems.
The fungus primarily targets deciduous trees, including apple, pear, and cherry orchards. Infection usually initiates through wounds, frost cracks, or improper pruning cuts, allowing the mycelium to penetrate and decompose the lignified tissues of the trunk and structural roots.
Symptoms of infestation include the appearance of dense clusters of mushrooms on the bark or near the base of the tree. Internally, the wood undergoes rapid decay, becoming brittle and discolored as the fungus breaks down structural components, which eventually compromises the tree's mechanical integrity.
Environmental conditions such as high humidity and the presence of decaying organic matter create ideal hotspots for the spread of Kuehneromyces mutabilis. Spores are dispersed through the air, and the mycelium can spread laterally through the soil, infecting adjacent trees via direct root-to-root contact.
The economic impact of this fungus is significant, as it leads to tree decline, reduced fruit production, and eventually tree failure due to collapse. Because the fungus often persists deep within the heartwood, internal control measures are rarely successful, emphasizing the importance of preventative strategies.
