Cylindrosporiosis

Cylindrosporiosis is a significant fungal plant disease caused by pathogens of the genus Cylindrosporium. This disease primarily affects the foliage of various botanical species, causing leaf spots, premature defoliation, and overall plant vigor decline. It is recognized as a major limiting factor in the productivity of several orchard and garden crops.

The host range of this pathogen is quite broad, heavily affecting Rosaceae family members, especially stone fruit trees like cherries and plums. The fungus survives unfavorable winter conditions within infected fallen leaves and debris on the soil surface. Once spring temperatures rise and moisture becomes available, the fungus produces spores that initiate primary infections.

Symptoms often manifest as small, irregular or circular spots on the leaf surface, which may darken over time. A characteristic sign of the infection is the development of white or grayish fungal pustules on the underside of the leaves, where conidia are produced. Severe infections result in extensive yellowing and early abscission of foliage, causing significant stress to the host plant.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development of the disease. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures are ideal for the rapid germination of spores and secondary infections. In orchards or fields where air circulation is poor, the humidity trapped within the canopy creates a perfect microclimate for the disease to spread rapidly through the plantation.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. Sanitation is the first priority: all fallen leaves must be removed and destroyed to minimize the overwintering inoculum. Proper pruning to ensure air movement is essential to reduce humidity around the foliage. Additionally, a timely application of protective or systemic fungicides is recommended during the growing season to prevent epidemic outbreaks and protect the harvest.
