Laboulbeniaceae are an order of microscopic ascomycetous fungi that live as obligate ectoparasites on arthropods, primarily insects. Unlike typical agricultural pathogens, these fungi do not colonize plant tissues but instead attach themselves to the host's exoskeleton. They extract nutrients through haustoria that penetrate the thin membranes of the host's chitin, affecting their mobility, mating success, and longevity.

In an agricultural context, these fungi are not plant pathogens, but they are crucial components of the ecosystem. They infect a wide range of hosts, including beetles and other insects that play a role in soil health or pest management. Their host specificity is often high, meaning they interact uniquely with their specific host species, influencing the population dynamics within field environments.

Symptoms of infestation appear as small, dark, hair-like, or bottle-shaped structures known as perithecia appearing on the host's body. These structures are most commonly found on the legs, elytra, or antennae of the infected insect. Heavy infestations can lead to physical impairment, where the infected insect struggles to perform daily tasks like searching for food or finding a mate.

The transmission and development of Laboulbeniaceae depend heavily on the social or behavioral patterns of the insect hosts. Infection spreads primarily through physical contact between individuals. Consequently, factors that increase insect density, such as favorable climatic conditions or high-density cropping environments, can lead to higher rates of infestation. High humidity levels are often correlated with the successful germination of fungal spores on the chitinous surface.
