Laboulbeniales is a unique order of obligate ectoparasitic fungi that grow exclusively on the external surfaces of arthropods, primarily insects. It is crucial to distinguish that these organisms are not plant pathogens and do not cause diseases in agricultural crops.

The fungus functions by attaching to the host's exoskeleton using a specialized structure called a haustorium. Through this structure, the fungus absorbs nutrients from the host's hemolymph. This process is generally slow and rarely kills the host insect immediately, distinguishing it from aggressive entomopathogenic fungi.

The host range for Laboulbeniales is extensive, including many species of beetles, flies, and mites. Within agricultural ecosystems, these fungi are regarded as natural associates of insects rather than pests or plant threats, although they can influence the population dynamics of certain insect species.

Visual signs of infection include the presence of microscopic, dark-colored fungal thalli (fruiting bodies) attached to the insect’s legs, elytra, or thorax. In cases of heavy infestation, the cumulative weight or mechanical obstruction caused by these fungal structures can impede the insect's movement or grooming efficiency.

Environmental conditions such as high humidity and crowding are essential for the transmission of these fungi. Spread occurs through direct physical contact between individuals. This is particularly frequent during mating or in dense populations, ensuring the fungus moves successfully from one host to another.

No protective measures are required against Laboulbeniales in agriculture since they do not harm plants. Instead, research often focuses on their biodiversity and potential use as bio-indicators of insect population health, as they rarely interfere with the economic utility of crops.
