Description

Labyrinthula is a genus of slime net protists known for causing the devastating «wasting disease» in marine seagrasses. While not a conventional agricultural crop pest, it is a significant phytopathological agent in marine botany, impacting the primary producers of shallow-water ecosystems worldwide.

The causative agent belongs to the Labyrinthulomycetes class. These organisms form a colony-like network of cells capable of gliding across host surfaces. They penetrate the leaf tissue of the plant, secrete digestive enzymes to break down cell walls, and ingest the contents, which leads to the rapid necrosis of the host plant.

The primary host for this pathogen is the eelgrass, Zostera marina. The disease significantly affects these grass beds, which provide essential habitats and carbon sequestration services. The pathogen is transmitted through direct contact between healthy and infected tissues or via motile zoospores released into the surrounding seawater column.

Symptoms initially appear as small, chlorotic spots that transition into dark, necrotic lesions. These spots expand rapidly under stressful environmental conditions, such as high water temperatures or low light availability. As Labyrinthula colonies expand, they cause the total collapse of the seagrass meadow, leading to secondary ecological consequences.

Control measures are difficult to implement in open marine environments. Current strategies focus on proactive management:

  • identifying and preserving genetically resistant seagrass genotypes;
  • reducing nutrient runoff that exacerbates disease severity;
  • monitoring environmental variables like sea surface temperature;
  • restricting the transplanting of vegetation from suspected infected sites.
Effective prevention relies on maintaining the overall health and resilience of the ecosystem.
