Labyrinthulaceae are a family of marine protists known for causing serious diseases in various marine plants, particularly seagrasses. These organisms, often referred to as "slime nets," are characterized by their unique ability to form an ectoplasmic network, which they use to move and obtain nutrients from their host plants.

The disease is primarily caused by members of the genus Labyrinthula. Once these pathogens attach to the surface of a leaf, they secrete digestive enzymes that penetrate the cell walls. By extracting the cellular contents, they lead to the destruction of plant tissue, causing significant metabolic strain and eventual plant death.

The most notable impact of Labyrinthulaceae is on seagrass meadows, especially species like Zostera marina. The infection is responsible for "wasting disease," a condition that has historically caused massive die-offs of seagrass worldwide. Such events have severe ecological consequences, leading to the collapse of local marine habitats and a decline in biodiversity.

Symptoms typically begin with the appearance of small, water-soaked, light-colored lesions on the leaves. As the infection progresses, these lesions turn brown or black and expand until the entire leaf turns necrotic and disintegrates. The rate of disease spread is highly dependent on environmental conditions and the overall health status of the host population.
