Important clarification for agronomists: the Laccaria genus is not a plant disease. It is a group of basidiomycete fungi that lead an exclusively beneficial, symbiotic lifestyle by forming ectomycorrhiza with the roots of many woody species. The misconception that these fungi are pathogens often arises when they appear on weakened plants, but they are never the cause of plant infections.

Laccaria does not act as a causal agent for any disease. On the contrary, these organisms are obligate mycorrhizal fungi. Their mycelium penetrates the root tissues of woody plants, creating a network that helps the tree absorb moisture and mineral nutrients from the soil, receiving carbohydrates from the plant in return. This is a classic example of mutualistic cooperation.

Crops that enter into symbiosis with Laccaria are primarily forest species: pines, spruces, birches, and some other deciduous trees. In an agronomic context, Laccaria is often found in forest nurseries, where the presence of these fungi on seedling roots is considered an indicator of high-quality planting material and better survival rates.

The conditions for Laccaria mycelium development directly depend on soil moisture and the presence of host tree roots. These fungi prefer acidic, moderately moist soils rich in organic matter. Spore dispersal occurs through the air or via soil mycelium, which can persist in the forest litter for decades, waiting for favorable conditions to produce fruiting bodies.

Protection measures against Laccaria are not necessary, as they cause no harm to agricultural production. In forestry, the use of mycorrhizal inoculants based on Laccaria laccata is actually encouraged to increase seedling resistance to drought and environmental stress. In this context, management practices focus not on eradication, but on promoting a healthy soil microbiome to strengthen plant vigor.
