Laccaria striatula is a species of gilled mushroom belonging to the Hydnangiaceae family. While it is sometimes mistakenly categorized as a plant disease due to its presence on forest floors and root zones, it is, in fact, a beneficial mycorrhizal fungus that plays a crucial role in supporting tree health.

The fungus acts as a symbiotic partner rather than a pathogen. By forming an ectomycorrhiza, the fungal hyphae envelop the tree roots, creating a vastly expanded surface area for the absorption of water and essential mineral nutrients, particularly phosphorus and nitrogen, from the soil.

Symptoms of its presence do not include damage or decay. Instead, the interaction results in vigorous root development and increased tolerance of the host plant to environmental stress. The visible presence of mushrooms is simply an indicator of a healthy, productive soil ecosystem where these symbiotic processes are active.
