Description
Lachnaceae is a family of ascomycetous fungi that act as opportunistic pathogens in agricultural and forest ecosystems. These fungi are typically associated with necrotic diseases of woody plants, targeting the bark, phloem, and cambium. By disrupting the nutrient transport system, these pathogens significantly impair the overall vitality and growth of the host plant.
The disease is caused by microscopic fungi that produce apothecia—small, cup-shaped fruiting bodies—on the surfaces of infected plant tissues. It is categorized as a necrotic bark disease, which can remain latent for extended periods before manifesting visible symptoms. The infection primarily targets the vascular system, gradually leading to localized necrosis and dieback of the host branches or stems.
Symptoms of infestation often appear as sunken, discolored patches on the bark. As the disease progresses, these lesions turn into cracks or open ulcers. In moist conditions, the characteristic tiny, saucer-shaped fungal fruiting bodies emerge from the affected areas. Over time, the weakened bark becomes susceptible to secondary colonization by secondary pathogens or wood-boring insects, further exacerbating the tree's health decline.
The development of Lachnaceae infections is heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and poor air circulation. Factors such as winter injury, drought stress, or previous mechanical wounds serve as entry points for the fungal spores. Once established, the fungus spreads through the dispersal of spores by wind and water splashes, making it highly contagious within crowded or poorly maintained plantations.
Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Key prevention steps include:
- conducting regular sanitary pruning of infected branches;
- maintaining optimal plant spacing for better aeration;
- protecting trees from mechanical damage;
- applying copper-based or systemic fungicides during high-risk periods.
