Lachnellula arida is an ascomycete fungus that acts as a causal agent of necrotic diseases in coniferous trees. As a pathogen, it primarily targets the cortical tissues and cambium, causing localized damage that disrupts the physiological functions of the tree. It is widely recognized in forestry as one of the organisms contributing to bark canker syndromes.

The primary hosts for this fungus include various species of larch (Larix) and, occasionally, pine trees. The pathogen prefers to colonize young branches or stems where the bark is relatively thin. It typically gains entry into the host through wounds, cracks, or areas previously damaged by insects or abiotic environmental stresses.

Visible signs of infection include the development of depressed, sunken cankers on the bark, often accompanied by resin flow, which is a defensive reaction of the tree. The most distinct diagnostic feature is the emergence of small, cup-shaped fruiting bodies known as apothecia, which display a vibrant orange or reddish hue, typically visible during cool and wet weather conditions.

The spread of the disease is heavily dependent on environmental factors, particularly humidity and temperature. Spores are primarily dispersed by wind and rain splash, allowing the fungus to infect nearby healthy tissues. High-moisture environments during the spring or autumn months provide the ideal conditions for spore germination and the subsequent colonization of the host plant.

The impact of Lachnellula arida ranges from minor branch dieback to significant growth suppression and, in severe cases, the death of young seedlings. Management strategies focus on forest hygiene, including the removal and destruction of infected branch material, as well as maintaining stand health through proper density management and protecting trees from mechanical and insect-related injuries.
