Lachnellula calyciformis is a pathogenic fungus that causes significant damage to various coniferous tree species, particularly focusing on the genus Abies (fir). It belongs to the order Helotiales and is categorized as a necrotrophic parasite capable of forming cankers on stems and branches.
The host range is primarily limited to conifers. The fungus infiltrates the bark and the cambium layer, gradually spreading through the phloem. In nursery settings, this pathogen can lead to severe losses by girdling the stems of young seedlings, ultimately causing the death of the plant.
The primary diagnostic sign of the infection is the development of distinct lesions on the bark, which later manifest as sunken cankers. During the reproductive stage, the fungus produces visible apothecia. These fruiting bodies are cup-shaped, characterized by a white-haired exterior and a vibrant orange or yellow inner disc.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the epidemiology of Lachnellula calyciformis. It thrives in cool, humid climates where moisture remains on the bark for extended periods. Dissemination of spores occurs via wind and rain splashes, facilitating the spread to neighboring healthy trees or susceptible wounded areas.

Infected branches should be pruned during dry weather to prevent further spore distribution.
