Lachnellula fuscosanguinea is a fungal pathogen belonging to the order Helotiales, known for causing canker diseases on coniferous tree species. The fungus primarily attacks the bark and cambium, disrupting the nutrient and water transport systems, which can lead to localized necrosis or tree mortality if the trunk is girdled.
The host range is primarily focused on the genus Pinus (pines). While the pathogen is most significant in pine forests, it can also affect various ornamental conifers if conditions are favorable for fungal development and the host trees are under stress from environmental factors or site conditions.
Symptoms of the infection include the formation of sunken cankers on the bark of stems and branches. A key diagnostic feature is the emergence of small, cup-shaped fruiting bodies (apothecia) that exhibit a striking orange-red to deep reddish-brown color. Heavy resinosis around the lesion site is a typical defensive response of the host plant.
The development of the disease is heavily dependent on moisture availability and the presence of entry points such as frost cracks, wounds, or insect-damaged bark. Spores are primarily dispersed by wind and splashing rain, allowing the pathogen to colonize new sites efficiently during cool, humid periods typical of spring and autumn.
Management of this disease focuses on silvicultural measures and sanitation. It is crucial to remove and destroy heavily infected branches to reduce the spore load in the immediate area.
