Description
Lachnellula occidentalis is a fungal pathogen responsible for Larch Canker, a serious disease affecting larch trees. As an ascomycete fungus, it primarily colonizes the bark and cambium layers of the tree, creating lesions that disrupt the transport of nutrients and water, ultimately stressing the host plant.
This pathogen specifically targets various Larix species. While it can exist as a saprophyte on dead wood, its parasitic phase is the most damaging. It tends to infect the tree through wounds, insect galleries, or natural fissures in the bark. Young trees are particularly susceptible to girdling, which can be fatal if the infection reaches the stem circumference.
The disease is diagnosed by the presence of sunken, necrotic cankers on stems and branches, often accompanied by resin flow (resinosis). The most distinctive diagnostic feature is the appearance of small, bright orange or yellow fruiting bodies known as apothecia. These cup-shaped structures, bordered with white, hair-like fringes, emerge from the bark during cool, moist weather conditions.
Development and spread of the fungus are heavily dependent on climatic factors. High humidity and moderate temperatures favor spore production and dissemination. Spores are primarily dispersed via wind and rain splash, allowing the pathogen to travel to neighboring trees. Poor site conditions, such as frost pockets or excessive stand density, significantly increase the tree's vulnerability to infection.

- Ensure proper stand spacing to improve air circulation.
- Avoid planting larch in frost-prone or waterlogged areas.
- Monitor plantations regularly for signs of resinosis and apothecia.
Management of Larch Canker centers on silvicultural practices rather than chemical treatments. Promoting vigorous tree growth through appropriate site selection and thinning is the most effective way to prevent outbreaks. By maintaining healthy stand conditions, the spread of the fungus can be effectively curtailed, protecting the economic and ecological value of the larch forest.
