Lachnellula subtilissima is a fungus belonging to the Hyaloscyphaceae family, known to cause bark necrosis and canker diseases on various conifer species. While often appearing as a saprophyte on dead tissue, it can behave as a facultative parasite, especially in stressed forest stands, contributing to the decline of spruce, fir, and larch trees.

The host range of this pathogen primarily includes species of the Picea and Abies genera. It typically infects trees through wounds, cracks in the bark, or areas damaged by insect activity. Once established, the mycelium colonizes the inner bark and cambium, disrupting the tree's vascular system and nutrient transport.

The most visible sign of infection is the emergence of small, cup-shaped apothecia. These fruiting bodies are characteristically orange to yellowish with distinct white hairs along the margins, appearing in clusters on the bark surface or within necrotic lesions. As the infection progresses, the surrounding bark dries out, cracks, and may lead to branch dieback or total death of the host.
