Lachnellula suecica is a species of fungus in the family Hyaloscyphaceae, known for causing canker and necrosis of the bark on various conifer species. As a specialized pathogen, it primarily infects the cambium layer, leading to localized tissue death that can eventually girdle branches and trunks.

The disease is commonly observed on trees within the genus Larix (larch) and Picea (spruce). It poses a significant risk to forest plantations, nursery stocks, and ornamental conifers located in regions characterized by cool and moist climates, where the pathogen can thrive unchecked.

The primary clinical sign of infection is the development of sunken cankers on the bark. During periods of high humidity, these areas exhibit characteristic small, orange-to-yellow, saucer-shaped fruiting bodies (apothecia) that emerge from the crevices of the bark, signaling the maturity of the fungal life cycle.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Lachnellula suecica. Excessive moisture, prolonged cloud cover, and cool temperatures are ideal for spore production and germination. The fungal spores are typically dispersed by wind or splashing rain, entering the tree through bark wounds, frost cracks, or sites damaged by insects.
