Lachnocladium refers to a genus of fungi within the Lachnocladiaceae family, which occasionally impacts agricultural and ornamental woody plants. While primarily saprotrophic, these fungi can act as opportunistic pathogens, targeting trees and shrubs that have been weakened by environmental stress, mechanical damage, or poor management practices, leading to tissue degradation.

The disease is caused by the colonization of bark and xylem tissues by the fungus's hyphae. The pathogen develops unique, often coral-like or branched fruiting bodies on the surface of the affected plant material. These structures are the primary source of inoculum, producing spores that facilitate the spread of the disease throughout an orchard or forest under favorable environmental conditions.

Symptoms of an infection include localized necrosis of the bark, discoloration of the wood, and a gradual decline in the plant's overall vigor. In many cases, the affected area becomes soft and spongy as the mycelium breaks down the structural components of the plant. If left untreated, the pathogen can girdle branches or trunks, resulting in the premature death of the affected plant parts.

Environmental conditions are critical for the proliferation of this fungus. High humidity levels, prolonged rainfall, and poor airflow within the canopy are primary triggers for the rapid development of Lachnocladium. Overcrowded plantations and high nitrogen levels, which can lead to lush but susceptible growth, often exacerbate the problem, providing more surfaces for the fungus to establish itself.

Integrated pest management strategies are essential to mitigate the impact of this pathogen:

  • Implement rigorous sanitation protocols, including the immediate removal and destruction of infected wood.
  • Ensure adequate spacing between plants to maximize air circulation and reduce humidity around stems and trunks.
  • Use protective fungicides during the dormant season to create a barrier against fungal spore entry.
  • Monitor trees for mechanical wounds and treat them promptly with appropriate pruning sealants or fungicides to prevent opportunistic infections.
