While primarily recognized as a saprotrophic organism that thrives on decaying wood and plant debris, it can occasionally act as an opportunistic pathogen in agricultural settings, particularly affecting plants that are already weakened by environmental stress, drought, or mechanical damage.

The biology of this pathogen involves the formation of small, cup-shaped fruiting bodies known as apothecia, which are distinctively covered in fine hairs. These structures produce spores that are dispersed via wind or water splash, allowing the fungus to colonize new hosts during periods of high humidity and moderate temperatures.

Typical host plants include various species of trees, woody shrubs, and sometimes the firm stems of perennial herbaceous plants. The fungus primarily targets the bark and vascular tissues. It typically gains entry through cracks in the cortex, pruning wounds, or areas previously damaged by insects or harsh winter conditions.

Infection symptoms are characterized by the emergence of tiny white to orange-toned apothecia on the host's surface. As the infection progresses, the plant may exhibit localized tissue necrosis, discoloration of the stems or bark, premature dieback of distal branches, and a general decline in growth vigor due to the disruption of transport tissues.

Effective management and prevention strategies rely on integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Key measures include maintaining orchard and field sanitation by removing infected branches and plant debris, protecting plants from mechanical injury, and ensuring proper air circulation within the canopy. If necessary, targeted application of broad-spectrum fungicides may be employed to control spore production during the active development phase.
