Lacrymaria lacrymabunda, commonly known as the Weeping Widow, is a saprotrophic fungus from the Psathyrellaceae family. While it is not a primary pathogen that attacks living plant tissue, it is frequently encountered in agricultural settings, particularly in lawns, vegetable gardens, and mulched landscapes, serving as a biological indicator of specific soil conditions.

The fungus functions as a decomposer, breaking down organic matter, such as dead wood, straw, and mulch. It does not cause direct plant disease, but its presence is often associated with environments that are overly saturated with moisture and rich in decaying organic material. In many cases, these conditions are also conducive to the development of soil-borne plant pathogens like root rot fungi.

Symptoms of its presence include the formation of small, gilled mushrooms that often exude droplets of moisture on their gills, giving them a "weeping" appearance. The caps are brownish and typically release dark, chocolate-colored spores. These mushrooms emerge in clusters from the soil, especially after rainfall or heavy irrigation, often coating the surrounding soil with a fine layer of spores.

The development of the mycelium is favored by high humidity (above 70%), poor soil aeration, and the accumulation of undecomposed cellulose-rich organic matter. In commercial or home gardening, it becomes a problem when soil drainage is insufficient or when improper mulching practices prevent the soil surface from drying out, potentially leading to oxygen starvation in plant roots.

Management and prevention focus on improving soil health and physical conditions. Recommended practices include:

  • Improving soil drainage systems to prevent waterlogging;
  • Ensuring proper soil aeration through regular hoeing or cultivation;
  • Reducing excessive mulch accumulation that remains consistently damp;
  • Promoting healthy soil microbial balance to discourage fungal dominance.
