The biological nature of this fungus involves the formation of ectomycorrhizae on the root systems of coniferous trees, primarily spruce and fir. By acting as a mediator in soil nutrient exchange, the fungus significantly increases the trees' uptake of phosphorus and nitrogen, which makes the host plants more resilient to environmental stressors.
Symptoms of its presence in a forest area include the emergence of dense, bright yellow fruiting bodies during the late summer and autumn seasons. These sporocarps are characterized by a pitted stem and a hairy margin, serving as an indicator of a thriving, well-functioning soil ecosystem within a coniferous forest.
The development of the fungus is highly dependent on humidity levels and the availability of organic litter on the forest floor. It prefers cool, moist conditions with temperatures ranging between 12 and 18 degrees Celsius, which are typical for the understory environments of mature spruce stands where the microclimate remains stable.
