Lactarius zonarius, commonly known as the bearded milkcap or zonate milkcap, is a basidiomycete fungus within the Russulaceae family. While not a primary pathogen of commercial field crops, it is a significant species in forest pathology and silviculture, often acting as a mycorrhizal partner for broad-leaved deciduous trees.
The fungus operates via a mycelial network that forms symbiotic associations with the roots of host trees such as oak and beech. This biological mechanism is essential for the tree's nutrient uptake, but under specific environmental conditions, high densities of mycelium can alter the soil microenvironment adjacent to forest edges bordering agricultural lands.
The host species primarily affected are mature hardwood trees found in shelterbelts and woodlands. In the context of agroforestry, monitoring these fungi is crucial as they occupy the same niche as other root-associated organisms, potentially affecting the overall health and vigor of young trees situated at the boundary between cultivated fields and forest zones.
