Description
Red thread disease is a common fungal infection affecting turfgrass, caused by the pathogen Laetisaria fuciformis. This basidiomycete fungus targets the foliage of various grasses, significantly impacting the aesthetic and physiological health of managed turf areas such as residential lawns and athletic fields.
The primary hosts of this disease include perennial ryegrass, Kentucky bluegrass, and fescue species. The pathogen thrives in high-density grass stands where the microenvironment near the soil surface remains humid and stagnant, providing an ideal habitat for the fungal mycelium to colonize and spread.
The symptoms of the disease typically appear as irregularly shaped patches of tan or pinkish-colored grass. As the infection progresses, the most distinct diagnostic feature emerges: bright red, gelatinous thread-like structures (stromata) that protrude from the tips of the leaves. These structures are most easily visible during periods of heavy dew or high humidity.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Laetisaria fuciformis. The disease is most prevalent under mild temperatures (ranging from 15°C to 25°C) and consistent moisture. Nutrient stress, particularly nitrogen deficiency, is a major predisposing factor, as poorly fertilized lawns exhibit significantly lower resistance to the pathogen.
The impact of red thread disease is primarily aesthetic, though severe infections can lead to turf thinning and loss of vigor. Management strategies focus on improving overall plant health through balanced fertilization and proper irrigation practices. In cases of persistent outbreaks, the following measures are recommended:
- Increasing nitrogen fertilization to promote vigorous regrowth.
- Improving soil aeration to reduce surface moisture.
- Applying systemic fungicides labeled for turf protection when cultural practices are insufficient.
