Lagenidium root rot is a destructive disease caused by pathogenic oomycetes belonging to the genus Lagenidium. While many species in this genus are primarily known as parasites of insects and crustaceans, certain species are recognized as significant plant pathogens capable of infecting the root systems of various agricultural and ornamental plants.

The pathogen is classified as an oomycete, characterized by the production of motile zoospores that navigate through aqueous environments. This pathogen is highly dependent on moist conditions, making it particularly problematic in saturated soils or hydroponic systems. The life cycle involves both asexual sporangia and resilient resting structures, which allow the organism to persist in the environment for extended periods.

This disease primarily targets seedlings, young plants, and crops grown in high-humidity environments. The infection typically initiates in the root hairs and progresses into the cortex. A wide range of crops, including various vegetable and floral species, are susceptible, especially when root conditions are compromised by poor drainage or excessive irrigation.

Symptoms of Lagenidium infection include the browning, softening, and decay of the root system, which prevents effective water and nutrient uptake. Consequently, plants exhibit sudden wilting, even when the soil appears adequately moist. Upon closer examination, roots may feel slimy to the touch, and affected tissues display significant necrosis, often becoming a site for secondary infections by other soil-borne fungi and bacteria.
