Lagynion ampullaceum is a microscopic, single-celled organism classified within the Chrysophyceae group. It is recognized as a specialized pathogen that infects various species of freshwater algae. Unlike typical pathogenic fungi, this organism is a protist that employs a unique strategy to derive nutrients from its hosts, playing a significant role in aquatic ecology.
The causative agent operates as an epibiont or parasite, forming distinct ampulla-shaped structures on the surface of its host's cell wall. By inserting a delicate feeding tube into the host cell, it extracts cytoplasm and essential nutrients, which inevitably leads to the host cell's death and prevents further growth or reproduction of the affected algal colony.
Common hosts for this pathogen include various diatom species such as Diatoma and Fragilaria. When these algae are used in aquaculture as primary food sources or studied in controlled laboratory environments, an outbreak of Lagynion ampullaceum can lead to significant population collapses, directly impacting the health of the entire biological system.
Symptoms of the infection are visible under microscopic examination. The most prominent signs include:
- presence of flask-shaped bodies attached to the algae;
