The fungus Lahmia kunzei is an ascomycete species associated with the decay of conifer needles. It functions primarily as a weak parasite or saprotroph, colonizing the needles and small twigs of host plants. The biology of the fungus is centered on the production of ascomata, which serve as the primary source of spore dispersal in forest environments.
The primary host for Lahmia kunzei is the spruce (genus Picea). It is most frequently found in environments where tree vigor has been compromised by environmental stress, poor soil conditions, or inadequate site selection, leading to an accumulation of dead or dying needle tissue.
Symptoms of the infection include the yellowing and subsequent browning of needles, which eventually fall prematurely. Upon closer inspection, small, black, dot-like apothecia of the fungus can be observed on the surface of the affected needles. These structures are diagnostic markers for the presence of Lahmia kunzei.
