Lambertella is a genus of ascomycetous fungi known as significant plant pathogens. These fungi are primarily responsible for causing necrotic lesions and soft rots in various agricultural and ornamental species. By secreting specific enzymes, the pathogen effectively breaks down plant tissues, leading to rapid deterioration of affected parts.

The host range of Lambertella includes a variety of crops, from berries and vegetables to woody shrubs. It is particularly damaging during the stages of fruit development and storage, where it can cause significant post-harvest losses if infections are not managed early in the cultivation cycle.

The primary symptoms include the formation of dark, sunken spots that expand rapidly across stems, leaves, or fruit surfaces. In many cases, these spots become soft and water-soaked as the fungus degrades the plant cells. The presence of apothecia (small, cup-shaped fruiting bodies) may appear on decaying organic matter, signaling the active phase of the fungus's lifecycle.

The development and spread of Lambertella are highly dependent on moisture levels. It thrives in humid environments with moderate temperatures, typically between 15°C and 22°C. Spore dissemination is facilitated by wind and splashing water, which allows the disease to spread rapidly through dense plant populations where humidity remains trapped.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Cultural practices such as pruning to improve airflow, reducing planting density, and removing debris are critical to lowering humidity. In cases of severe outbreak, professional fungicide application is necessary to inhibit spore germination and protect the crop until harvest.
